Join CriticalMass in its second Author Interview conducted by the only other remaining contributor, Tuk. Read along as Zen rambles incoherently using as many commas as he can to make epic run on sentences that will make all of you out there crazy!
As Zen previously stated, we have known each other a very long time – especially so when you consider this is an online friendship. I have a great deal of respect for him as a person and his general knowledge of just about everything. He’s basically the Ken Jennings of the gaming world. Besides myself, he’s the only other person close to me that I’ve heard passionately endorse or convince people otherwise to play video games. He also had prior blogging experience so he’s helped me out tremendously with the ‘learning how to use my words’ and taught me how to wipe my own ass. On with the questions!
So where about’s are you from?
The South, unfortunately. Too hot in the summer and not enough people to play video games with around here. Fuck hunting and fishing. I prefer staying inside where there is air conditioning. We didn’t evolve as a species enough to invent the perfect inside to spend it all outside.
What or who initially got you started in gaming?
I remember my first video game being Star Wars: Tie-Fighter. My dad got the game for me because I liked Star Wars so much as a kid and I was instantly hooked. After that it was simple escalation to a friend’s NES, a cousin’s Sega Genesis, or my own N64. Ever since then I have had a deep love of gaming and the insane enjoyment I derive from it.
Would you say that Tuk is one of the greatest gamers of all time, or THE greatest of all time?
I think Tuk would like to think that he is both of those things at the same time. He walks into the room and objects start orbiting him because his ego is so big that it has its own gravitational pull.
What other interests do you have outside of gaming?
Besides video games, I like playing Magic: The Gathering with friends when I can. That or Dungeons and Dragons. If you mean games entirely, then I would say that I really enjoy debating people on various topics, reading fantasy novels or about history, watching TV or Movies, and just generally passing the time until I die.
Why are you such a Guild Wars 2 fanboy?
Because I like to get my hopes up only to have them dashed, obviously. Simply put, I think it will change the entire landscape of MMOs, which have grown static and stale, in my opinion. Many people are worried about the viability of a game that seeks to challenge everything, but if Arenanet can pull off half of what they hope to accomplish then it will be great. Hell, it can’t be worse than Star Wars: The Old Republic.
You’ve showcased some of your disdain towards the companies who crap all over your favorite hobby, what are some of your favorite game companies and why?
I really like companies that put the customer first and seek to build rapport. Some of my favorite are CD Projekt who are behind GoG.com. The reason I like them so much is that they put out an amazing game, Witcher 2. They then gave all the DLC that they created for it away for free and all the content that they made for the X-Box version of the game they are giving to all those that already own the Witcher 2. It is actually kind of sad, but essentially I like all the gaming companies that don’t treat the customer like a criminal or someone to be nickel and dimed.
Why are you such a Star Wars fanboy?
Fuck Star Wars: The Old Republic and fuck the prequels. Both of those things sucked. With that out of the way; the reason why I love Star Wars is because it was my first sci-fi world that I experienced. I remember walking into the living room one day and seeing Luke Skywalker on a taunton on the TV. I asked my dad what was the show on and he told me it was Star Wars. I was hooked ever since then. The whole universe just inspired my imagination and I grew up playing the games, watching the movies, and reading the books. I absolutely love the universe. Unfortunately George Lucas is a money-grubbing asshole who decided to sell out the Star Wars franchise to make as much money as he could and so the universe is continuously shit on.
What’s it like to work with Tuk while putting up with his retardation and how hard is it to have non 1-sided conversations with him when talking about video games?
Well, if you didn’t know, he is the oldest 26 year old you will ever meet. So having a conversation with him is like talking to an old man who always gets the early bird special at Denny’s. Basically, fuck you, I want my early bird special. That isn’t to say that he refuses to change his opinions on things, just that it takes a lot of convincing, that or a lot of bacon.
How big did the consumer’s ass eventually get in The Secret World: A Financial Rape Story?
Goatsie big. Although if you have no idea of what I speak, I suggest that you immediately Google that to find out what it is. Make sure you look at images.
How do you feel about frontal male nudity?
Bonus: As Bush would say Everything’s Zen so… Is Everything Zen?
If Guild Wars 2 would hurry the fuck up and release it would be. I need a good MMO to play.
