I’ll just throw it out there – the Resident Evil 6 pre-order bonuses look and smell like money grubbing DLC to me. Sure, it’s a multiplayer mode map that not many people will actually give enough of a shit to try more than once or twice. It’s just the whole principle of the matter to split up the 3 maps among various retailers. Wouldn’t this segregate the community? Unless… you pre-order 3 copies to get all the different maps, or they get packaged and resold at a later date. Wtf bro. I’ll give it to them, they have some mountain-sized cajones to drop that little gem into the market on the ass-end of the recent backlash that was their on-disc DLC fiasco with that Street Fighter 73 Turbo X Tek XX Marvel… or whatever the hell it is. Their responses to the whole matter was probably some of the saddest and most pathetic things I’ve read (besides my facebook wall) in a long time. I’d post some links to certain references but you can quite literally find hundreds of pages about the fiasco by Googling ‘capcom dlc controversy’.
What exactly is Blood Bowl you ask? Well to start, it’s a PC game that is licensed by Games Workshop, developed by Cyanide Studios and published by Focus Interactive. I’ll explain the actual game as best as I can by simply stating what I always tell my friends when they hear me talking about it. Blood Bowl is a combination of Mutant League Football, Rugby, and insert random grid-based tactical RPG here. Each team has 11 players that you navigate around on the pitch(field) and you basically play a game of football-like chess that involves a lot of calculated risks and some luck. It’s definitely a niche game and many find it very difficult if they haven’t previously played the table top version or other online versions of it such as FUMBBL.
A few of us might remember a company by the name of Mythic Studios, their most popular game franchise was Dark Age of Camelot, and they pretty much were the go to guys for addictive pvp. They were fortunate enough to gain the support of Games Workshop to produce the highly anticipated MMO known as Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Unfortunately this meant being bought out by the likes of EA of thus becoming Mythic Entertainment. The game released back in Sept of ’08, being heralded by many as the possible WoW killer (as everything that was new was being labeled at the time). Long story short, it flopped fairly hard for so many reasons, we’d be here all day if I tried to list all of them and thus; didn’t even put a dent in Warcraft’s subs.
All joking aside, there has been a recent phenomenon on this website called Kickstarter. Essentially the site allows people to donate to causes that they deem worthy and if the project reaches its goal, then the people donating get charged. Obviously if the funding isn’t generated, then all the money is refunded. It is a rather cool idea and it has started to impact gaming, in what I think is a rather big way.
“So, hey guys I got a great idea. Let’s come out with a $60 MMO with a monthly subscription. The game will offer no leveling, yet you still have to level skills; a crazy amount of skills. So don’t forget that we are also legendary at being terrible at balance. The plot will involve being human in a modern setting, a part of those tin foil conspiracy theories, and wicked crazy monsters,” says the Greedy Asshole.
“Okay, sounds pretty standard,” says the bent-over customer.
Blizzard has long been one of my favorite gaming companies for the simple fact that they make great games. Just like anyone else I have my various gripes and complaints about them, but I’ve been playing their games for over 15 years now – that’s a pretty solid track record with me. I’m not a very fickle gamer, I enjoy a good challenge and coordinated team-play. But alas, even Blizzard is not free from my scorn.. as the Diablo 3 release date approaches I find myself facepalming more and more as I lurk on their god forsaken message boards from time to time.
So this game is old news to pretty much everyone who isn’t a staunch SWG fanboy right? Right?! Fine, but I’m still going to rant about why this game never had any intention of being a serious MMO outside of milking the cash cow that is the Star Wars religion, er.. franchise.
For those of you that are still soldiering on and “enjoy” this game, you get nothing from me except a facepalm. I, for one, believe this is quite possibly one of the worst, over-hyped piles of steaming caca I have ever had the displeasure of playing my way through. I’ll pretty much be repeating what’s already been said, but I just have to get this off of my chest and onto the interwebs for my own personal satisfaction.
